Classifying energy trading
We will determine which trading transactions and processes are relevant to your customer.
BKW secures electricity for basic supply up to three years in advance and for customers on the free market up to six years in advance, thereby offering a reliable supply, predictable prices, contractual flexibility and protection against price fluctuations.
Energy trading balances out fluctuations in supply and demand caused by the varying generation of renewable energy. BKW combines 15-minute intraday trading with flexible power plant operation to offset imbalances, use energy efficiently, strengthen grid stability and ensure a reliable supply.
Forward contracts are used to hedge deliveries up to six years in advance. Spot trading covers short-term deliveries. Day-ahead prices are set in an auction for the hours of the following day; intraday transactions take place in 15-minute or hourly blocks shortly before delivery at agreed prices, which may fluctuate over time.
BKW trades in or procures EECS guarantees of origin, naturemade, TÜV SÜD, ELCERT, “green and white” certificates, certificates under the Polish system, as well as biogas and emissions certificates.
Balancing groups are energy accounts that coordinate trading, generation and supply. The PSA offsets imbalances with other groups up to two days after delivery, thereby reducing the costs of balancing energy before the corrected positions are reported to the grid operator.
Electricity futures are traded anonymously and against collateral. The initial margin is deposited when the transaction is concluded, the variation margin covers daily fluctuations in value, and price spikes can trigger a margin call within 48 hours. The collateral is refunded after delivery.
OTC trading is a direct transaction between buyer and seller in which price, volume and delivery are agreed. Unlike anonymous exchange trading, this type of trading depends more heavily on the creditworthiness of the counterparty, while exchanges use collateral to reduce the risk.
Ancillary services ensure that the grid maintains a frequency of 50 Hz. Swissgrid procures control energy through tenders and calls on producers such as BKW to increase or reduce their output. Successful bids secure capacity; additional remuneration is paid for the power made available.
